Best Quiet Generator for Camping (2026): 4 Picks Ranked by Noise and Weight

How we evaluated: WildJoule has not bench-tested any generator here, and we have not measured their noise. Every figure below is the manufacturer’s published spec from Honda, Yamaha and Westinghouse product pages, checked October 11, 2026. Makers measure decibels under different conditions, so read the noise column as a rough ranking, not a lab result.

The best quiet generator for camping is usually the smallest one that still runs what you brought. Noise climbs with output: Honda’s 1,000 W EU1000i is rated at 42–50 dB(A), while its 2,200 W EU2200i is rated 48–57 dB(A). If all you need is phones, lights, a CPAP and a small fridge, buying the bigger machine means listening to it all weekend for power you never use.

Quick verdict

Quietest: Honda EU1000i (42–50 dB(A), 28.7 lb) for light loads. Best all-round: Honda EU2200i (48–57 dB(A), 47.4 lb), quiet enough for most campgrounds with twice the power. Best for a trailer: Yamaha EF2200iS, louder on paper but with a 30A RV outlet and the longest run time per tank. Value alternative: Westinghouse iGen2200, but it has no CO sensor and isn’t CARB-compliant.

One honest line before the picks. I haven’t camped next to any of these, and I’ve never put a sound meter on one. I compared the four on what each maker actually publishes, and I point out where those numbers aren’t directly comparable. I got into this through a lot of time without dependable power, and I’ve learned the quiet option is the one people actually keep running.

Best quiet generator for camping: the comparison table

ModelRated / maxPublished noiseWeightTank / run timeCO protection
Honda EU1000i900 / 1,000 W42–50 dB(A)28.7 lb0.55 gal / 6.8 h at ¼CO-Minder shutoff
Honda EU2200i1,800 / 2,200 W48–57 dB(A)47.4 lb0.95 gal / 8.1 h at ¼CO-Minder shutoff
Yamaha EF2200iS1,800 / 2,200 W57–65 dBA55.2 lb1.24 gal / 10.5 h at ¼CO sensor
Westinghouse iGen22001,800 / 2,200 W“as low as 52 dBA”46 lb1.14 gal / 12 h at 25%None

A note on that noise column. Honda gives a range from quarter load to rated load. Yamaha’s range is higher, but it may be measured differently. Westinghouse gives a single best-case figure and doesn’t say at what distance or load. So the Yamaha isn’t necessarily as loud as its numbers suggest next to the Westinghouse; we just can’t tell from the spec sheets. Every decibel figure here is the maker’s.

1. Honda EU1000i: the quietest, if 900 W is enough

Honda rates the EU1000i at 42 dB(A) at quarter load and 50 dB(A) at its 900 W rated load. At 28.7 lb it’s the only one here that’s a genuine one-hand carry. It has Honda’s CO-Minder, which shuts the engine down if carbon monoxide builds up near it, and two identical units can be paralleled for up to 2,000 W.

The catch is size. 900 W runs a CPAP, lights, phone and laptop charging, a 12 V fridge’s charger and a fan. It won’t run a coffee maker, a microwave, a hair dryer or an RV air conditioner. The 0.55-gallon tank lasts 6.8 hours at quarter load and only 3 hours at full load, so you’ll refuel more often than with the bigger units. Skip it if anyone in the group expects to make toast.

2. Honda EU2200i: the best quiet generator for camping overall

Twice the power for 6 to 7 dB(A) more and about 19 lb more weight. That’s the trade, and for most campers it’s the right one. 1,800 W running covers a coffee maker or a small microwave one at a time, an 11,000 BTU RV air conditioner with little else running, and everything the EU1000i handles. It has CO-Minder and can parallel with a second unit for up to 4,400 W.

Its weakness is a 0.95-gallon tank: 8.1 hours at quarter load, 3.2 at full. Plan on refuelling once a day if you run it evenings and mornings. And it won’t reliably start a 13,500 BTU AC by itself; our generator for RV air conditioner guide explains why. Full details in the Honda EU2200i review.

3. Yamaha EF2200iS: best for a travel trailer

Same 1,800 W / 2,200 W output as the Honda, with two things campers with trailers care about: a 30A RV outlet on the panel, so the shore cord plugs straight in, and a 1.24-gallon tank that Yamaha rates at 10.5 hours at quarter load. It has a CO sensor too.

What you give up is weight, 55.2 lb against the Honda’s 47.4, and a higher published noise range of 57–65 dBA. Whether it’s actually louder in the campground is unclear from spec sheets alone, for the reasons above. If you tent camp, the Honda makes more sense. If you tow, the Yamaha’s outlet and tank win. Our Honda EU2200i vs Yamaha EF2200iS comparison goes through it point by point, and the Yamaha EF2200iS review covers the rest.

4. Westinghouse iGen2200: the value pick, with two caveats

On paper the iGen2200 matches the 2,200 W class: 1,800 W running, 2,200 W peak, 46 lb, and Westinghouse’s longest claim here at 12 hours on a 1.14-gallon tank at 25% load. It’s parallel-capable with Westinghouse’s cord, and the residential warranty is three years. Noise is listed as “as low as 52 dBA”, with no distance or load given.

The two caveats are real. Westinghouse’s spec page lists no CO sensor on this model and says it is not CARB-compliant, which matters if you live or camp in California. Westinghouse also sells an iGen2200c variant with a CO sensor, which we couldn’t fully spec-check, and its own US Amazon link was marked out of stock when we checked. If CO shutoff matters to you, and around tents it should, the Hondas and the Yamaha are the safer buys.

How quiet is quiet enough for a campground?

There’s an actual number for national parks. National Park Service regulations (36 CFR 2.12) prohibit running a generator in a way that exceeds 60 dB(A) measured at 50 feet. Quiet inverter generators like these four are the class most likely to stay under that; a loud open-frame unit often won’t. Campgrounds also set quiet hours, often overnight, and some ban generators in tent loops entirely. Check the rules for the specific site before you pack one.

Placement matters as much as the model. Point the exhaust side away from tents and neighbours, keep it well clear of anywhere people sleep, and never run it inside a tent, vestibule or camper. Our portable generator carbon monoxide safety guide covers distances.

Should you skip the generator altogether?

For a lot of tent and car campers, yes. If your loads are phones, lights, a CPAP and a 12 V fridge, a power station is silent, allowed in quiet hours and needs no fuel. Our best power station for car camping picks and the camping power guide show where the line falls. Generators earn their place on longer trips, in shade where solar struggles, or when someone needs real heating or cooking power.

Frequently asked questions

What is the quietest generator for camping?

Of the four here, the Honda EU1000i has the lowest published figures: 42 dB(A) at quarter load and 50 dB(A) at its 900 W rated load. The trade-off is only 900 W of output.

Is 60 dB quiet enough for a campground?

National parks set 60 dB(A) at 50 feet as the limit. A generator rated around 50–60 dB(A) at its own test distance will normally be well under that at 50 feet, but campground quiet hours still apply.

What size quiet generator do I need for camping?

Under 900 W of loads (CPAP, lights, charging, fan), a 1,000 W unit. For a coffee maker, microwave or an 11,000 BTU AC, the 2,200 W class. A 13,500 BTU AC needs more than one 2,200 W unit.

Do I need a CO sensor on a camping generator?

It isn’t a substitute for safe placement, but it’s a meaningful backup around tents and campers. Three of the four picks here have one; the Westinghouse iGen2200 does not.
