Modern smart alternators shut down when the vehicle computer decides charging isn’t needed, and they can also drop voltage below that threshold while the engine is running. A dumb DC-DC charger in that scenario either stops charging (leaving you thinking the unit is broken) or worse, keeps drawing current from a starter battery that is no longer being charged, potentially draining it.
